Visualization of the Week: Urban metabolism

This week’s visualization comes from PhD candidates David Quinn and Daniel Wiesmann, who’ve built an interactive web-mapping tool that lets you explore the “urban metabolism” of major U.S. cities. The map includes data about cities’ and neighborhoods’ energy usage (kilowatt per hour per person) and material intensity (kilo per person) patterns. You can also view population density.

Solar Sails

A form of spacecraft propulsion using the radiation pressure of light from a star or laser to push enormous ultra-thin mirrors to high speeds. Japan’s JAXA successfully tested IKAROS in 2010. The goal was to deploy and control the sail and for the first time determining the minute orbit perturbations caused by light pressure. Orbit determination was done by the nearby AKATSUKI probe from which IKAROS detached after both had been brought into a transfer orbit to Venus.

There is only one reason to consider deploying a scheme with even a tiny chance of causing such a catastrophe: if the risks of not deploying it were clearly higher. No one is yet prepared to make such a calculation, but tresearchers are moving in that direction.

Among the greatest global population trends is the continued migration of people to cities and their associated metro areas. One estimate has it that by 2050 some 90 percent of global population will live in cities or within an hour of them. Another estimate suggests that today 80 percent of U.S. residents live in cities (bear in mind these numbers often call a town of 20,000 a city) while globally some 51 percent now live in urban areas. The World Health Organization estimates that by 2050 70 percent of the world population or 6.5 billion people will live in urban areas.

The best way to grow a movement has always been to aim for inclusion and lead by inspiration. Many in my generation find promise in people-centered solutions to environmental problems that have gained traction in the United States under the catchall description of “green jobs.” Leaders of this movement include Van Jones, Majora Carter, Billy Parish, and many others who have made the case that being green isn’t just a way to protect the environment, it’s a way to revitalize our economy, culture, and communities.

I'm a Futurist on the journey from Ego to Eco, author of 5 books (see below), and a globe-trotting keynote speaker on media, social technologies, communications and - as of late 2011 - 'Green Futures'. I am currently looking at sustainable future scenarios, biosphere-like economics and what I like to call 'ecotalism' (or capitalism 2.0...?) as well as at renewable and networked energy and the idea of possibly adapting internet, networked-society principles to the world's urgent climate and environment issues.
